There are times when I think I could probably earn more money by working in the city. Why don't I consider being a commuter again?
A 6:04 a.m. train in the dead of winter cured me of that notion veeeery quickly. It was so cold this morning that I felt as if my toes would freeze and shatter.
But this morning's frosty weather did bring to mind an amusing story my grandmother told me a few weeks ago.
My grandmother doesn't drive. Never did. As such, back in the day, her trip to work required a combination of walking and taking the bus.
You have to remember: This was many years ago -- before plows and snow blowers were prevalent. So, it was not uncommon for her to -- in the worst of it -- trudge through waist-deep snow, sometimes for streets at a time. (Yes, I know this story smacks of "When I Was Your Age, I Crawled to School On a Bed of Broken Glass" but go with me here. Hyperbole isn't her style.)
In any case...
Grandma finally trudged her way through the requisite number of blocks and slowly made her way to the stop. She finally emerged from the snow bank to hop (more like "drag her cold, tired ass") on to the bus. But then, two strange things happened: she couldn't move her feet and everyone was staring at her.
In her travels, it seems the weight of the heavy, wet snow popped all of her buttons, dragging her pants down to her ankles! So, here she was -- soaked, surly, half naked and waiting for the bus. So, she did the best she could -- gathered up her remaining dignity and her waistband and proceeded to make it through the reset of the commute with her hand in her crotch.
Now, that's cold.
